BILLY PORTER Our Roserose Fashion Icon who breaks the binary concept of gender

« Be who you are, and what you feel, at all times. And that is what I do with fashion. » Billy Porter

Billy Porter is an African-American singer and actor. After studying art and cinema, he began his acting career on the Broadway stage at the age of 25. He was noticed for having played in many successful musicals, but it is Pray Tell’s role in the Pose TV series, depicting the lives of queer and trans kids in 1980s New York City, that earned him the distinction of being the first openly gay African-American to win the Emmy Award for Best Actor in 2019.

« 2019 is the year that all of my dreams came true. »

Off-screen, Porter shone just as brightly last year. Fashion has the ability to touch people in a different way, and Billy Porter has something to say through clothes : « My goal is to be a walking piece of political art every time I show up. To challenge expectations. ». According to him, fashion is a way to break the binary conception of gender, he interrogates issues of inclusiveness and masculinity in a Hollywood that is still very much rooted in gendered patterns of representation. Lifelong passionate about fashion, each of his outfits is thus very meticulously chosen and often designed by a committed designer.

His fashion choices have become a powerful tool for self-expression and representation. So we have decided to show you some of his best outfits on red carpets, what will be your favourite?

« At the first fitting in the gown, I felt alive. I felt free. And open, and radiant. And beautiful! Which has not always been the case for me. I haven’t always felt so good about myself. It really is astonishing how much of an effect clothes have on your spirit. […] This look was interesting because it’s not drag. I’m not a drag queen, I’m a man in a dress. »
